Getting Down to Business - by DeeinNJ
(January 2006)Happy New Year everyone! Many of us have had time away from our daily routine during the holidays, whether that be a job or the grind of kids activities, school, housework etc.
Prior to the holidays, I had a chance to get together with fellow Doll Diva Audrey and we spent a day having fun. Later in the day, we decided to set up a scene that would become Veronique’s New York Office for W Cosmetics, thus, the name of today’s discussion... getting down to business.
We envisioned Veronique’s Paris Office to be more elegant and European in flavor, but her New York Office would be much more contemporary. Because Veronique travels often between the two world fashion capitals, she needed a suitable space to conduct business in both. We didn’t know what we would use, we just opened up some boxes of props and began arranging and seeing what looked good.
I store my props and accessories for my dioramas by type. So, I had already set aside a box with all sorts of “office related” accessories. In another box, I have my “contemporary” furnishings stored together. So, this made it easy for Audrey and I to have fun playing with what we’d put in Vero’s office.
When looking at the set up, I noticed how there was such a mix of furnishings from high-end to playline, plus lots of little accessories that had come with dolls or fashions I’d collected over the years. Some are even Rement miniatures that I used for different purposes. So, let this be an example that there’s plenty you can mix and match to create your dioramas. Also, save all of those little accessories you get with other purchases and store them by type. You never know just where they will fit in!
I set up my Room with a View and used it’s magnetic walls to hold up the red & white paper walls and the computer printouts of the city skyline and the vertical blinds. We each chose a doll who would attend the “meeting” and then I snapped some photos to share with you. You’ll notice the FR Loft Collection Liquor cabinet serving nicely as a wall unit displaying important reports in binders and also an array of the latest cosmetic samples from W Cosmetics (which came from both Bratz and Barbie playsets). Vero can enjoy the liquor later! The white sofa and red rug are also Fashion Royalty furnishings.

The red desk chairs, as well as the round table near the window came from Mary Kate & Ashley’s New York Minute playset (I repainted the table top white). The TV is also from a Mary Kate & Ashley playset. I cut paper to make the screen black. The folding screen is from one of the new Fashion Fever furniture sets. Notice on that table top a press sheet that came with the Fashion Plate Gift Set. I also used some of the W Cosmetics accessories that came with the Fashion Currency FR fashion, such as the the folio & business cards.

Veronique’s desk was from a playset I bought at a discount liquidator’s store. It was called Miss Cool’s Diningroom. It came with lots of great pieces which I repainted. This desk, which was the diningroom table, came as is. I just changed the tips of the table base to black instead of purple with a Sharpie marker. It was red and perfect for this color scheme. On her desk are lots of little office accessories. That desk lamp is actually a floor lamp for a miniature Rement room! And that wooden flower pot on top of the wall unit is actually a trash can from the same set.

If you want window views or blinds, you can take photos with your digital camera of real scenes and them size them correctly to print on your computer. You can print several sheets and piece them together to make a large window if your computer only prints 8 1/2 x 11 sheets.
Today’s discussion isn’t really providing anything new in the way of diorama technique, but it’s a nice example of what you can whip up with props that are readily available. Hope you enjoyed it. Audrey and I had fun creating it!
