A Gift for Yourself- by DeeinNJ
(December 2005)Happy Holiday Season everyone!
It’s the season for giving and I thought I’d do a little gift shopping this past weekend... then keep stuff for myself! Ha, ha. Well, I got the idea from fellow Divas board member Tony in Berlin to look for bath products packaged in little cabinets (Thanks, Tony).
To the right are two of Tony's pics:
I remembered seeing similar sets at A.J. Wright, so after seeing the photo Tony posted, I made a beeline back to the store wondering why I hadn’t bought it when I first saw it (what was I thinking that day?!).
I found this bath set packaged in a rather large cabinet for $12.99. It was much larger than the one in Tony’s photos, so I wasn’t sure about it, but I bought it anyway, figuring I could always return it.
After I took the bath products out and looked at this huge cabinet for a while, I realized that it would make a great set of dolly sized French doors--something I’ve been on the hunt for for ages.
I got out my "Rooms with a View" calendar that I purchased at AC Moore for a quarter (it’s a 2005 calendar, so they were on clearance, but I think the original cost was only $1.99 to begin with).

The calendar pages were almost a perfect fit for inside the cabinet. I just trimmed off about a quarter inch on one edge of the calendar page and rested it inside the cabinet. Amazingly, the page stays up all by itself when the doors are closed (or even just one door). Now I have a set of French doors with a scenic view.

You could probably use any scenic calendar pages that have art or photographs and just trim them to fit inside the armoire. Here’s a look with the doors closed and a different scene inserted.
I hung curtains on either side of the cabinet so it looked more like an actual room.Another option would be to put an indoor scene inside the armoire (something cut from a home decor magazine) and create a patio scene in front of it so it seems that your dolls are out on the patio or terrace looking in. Or you could wedge a wooden dowel below the shelf in the middle and make a nice little armoire for hanging clothes. This would be suitable for a boutique or a very luxurious bedroom! The shelf above is nice and roomy and good for storing hatboxes, shoe boxes, etc.
I would search at stores like Ross, Marshalls, TJ Max, AJ Wright, etc. for this type of thing. Drug stores, and as Tony found, at other discount stores/markets. The bath set came with moisturizer, body scrub, soap, a sponge, bubble bath and shower gel. So, I figure I can make a nice gift basket for a friend with the bath products and I end up with a FREE set of french doors for my dolls! So, why not treat yourself this holiday! And if you are really into giving yourself what you deserve... keep the bath products for yourself and relax in the tub for a while!
