Here are the instructions:
Materials you will need:
- Foam board 2 pieces. ( I like to use the colored ones so that the room looks painted and I don't have to wallpaper it later.)
- balsa wood strips-2 half inch thick and then 2 each of the next two sizes down
- flat ended sewing pins(small)
- a picture of a garden or outside scene
- small scraps of foam padding
- exacto knife and plenty of new blades.
- glue and/or double sided tape
First you need to select your picture and make it the size you want. I made mine about 8X8. You can find lots of picture online if you do a goggle search. Then just print it out on regular paper. Trim any white edges.
Next you are going to measure and cut out a section of the foam board to measure the same as your picture. (The way I found easiest to cut straight lines is to use your ruler. Line your ruler where you want to cut and follow the edge of your ruler with your exacto knife. The sharper the blade the easier it is to cut nice smooth edges) Remember you want it to be about 2-3 inches off the bottom edge so that it is easy and looks realistic for your FR or Barbie sized doll to sit on her window seat. And you will probably want it in the middle of the board so you have some walls to decorate in your room. Once your section is cut this will be the background piece for your window box. Tape the picture to this section.
Next we will cut strips to make the box edges. So we need 4 sides. I made my box 2 inches deep. It only needs to be deep enough for your doll to sit on. So if your picture is 8X8 then you will need 4-8X2 strips. Once these are cut you will attach them with the pins (like nails) around the inside of your window box. Line them up neat and you may have to cut some edges to fit snuggly. Don't attach the back wall part yet.
Now we need to make the window/door. You need to make a grid on your picture lightly with pencil. In my window I made it appear like a French door. Start by making a line down the middle. Then dividing each half into 3 equal sections across. After that make 5 equal sections down. Next take your balsa strips and starting with the widest pieces first. Make a frame around your picture. So two of these strips should be 8 inches long. and then the strips down will be slightly shorter than 8 inches to fit under the top of the frame. With the next smallest size balsa strip cut two pieces to fit on the middle line. Then cut all the strips to fit on the inside lines of your grid with the thinnest balsa wood. Once these are all cut and fit unto your grid take them off and paint them white. Once the paint is dry use Elmer's glue to attach them to your grid. Glue the outside frame down first. Then glue the inside pieces. The last strips to be put on should be the 10 pieces going down. These will lay on top of the two strips and only get glued to those. I know this all sound confusing so please look at the picture for reference. To finish off your door and make it look real add the door knobs. Once all the glue is dried your can pin this section to the open box. The pins should go right thru the balsa wood .
Next you need to cut your foam padding piece to fit as a cushion for your window seat. Should be close to 2X8. Maybe a little smaller. Make sure it fits in the window and then sew a pillow case for it. Or for those who don't sew you could probably hot glue fabric on it to look like a pillow case. Then create some pillows to put on your seat and make your doll comfy.
You can also decorate your walls. I added some scrapbooking paper to the inside of my box to add some more color and to hide any imperfections. Then I added some matching paper to the walls to give it more depth.
Hope these make sense. I wish I could draw you the instructions. I am such a visual person its hard to say how to do it in words. If you get really confused email me and I can hopefully talk you thru it! Or you could call me too! Good luck!
